The Issues

We are concerned about the environmental health, safety and economic welfare of the Niagara Watershed and Great Lakes Basin.

Sail Boats

Sixty years of uncontrolled development and toxic chemical discharge along the watershed has caused the erosion of the shoreline and effected fish and wildlife habitats including the nation’s symbol, the bald eagle.

Why do we continue to allow contamination of our drinking water?

Why do we continue to allow toxic chemicals to be landfilled in the Great Lakes basin?

Why are radioactive wastes stored in the Great Lakes basin?

Emissions from smokestacks contaminate our water.

Do fish advisories help promote our fishing industry?

We drink what others dump!

Do any of the above activities promote our health and well being?  Do they help to promote our tourism and fishing industry?  Do they promote our economic future?  Will they help make our area the best place to live in the United States?

The International Joint Commission (IJC) and the 21st Century

Response of the IJC to a Request by the Governments of Canada and the United States for Proposals on How To Best Assist Them to Meet the Environmental Challenges of the 21st Century.

"In recent years, in region after region, we have found that our diplomacy has been influenced by success or failure in managing the environment. This shouldn't surprise us. After all, competition for scarce resources is an ancient source of human conflict. In our day, it can still elevate tensions among countries or cause ruinous violence within them.... By definition the global environment deeply affects our own people."

Madeleine Albright
Press Remarks on Earth Day
April 22, 1997

"Environmental degradation and resource scarcity are the underside of globalization. They are threats to human security that respect no boundaries. Faced with this kind of threat, the old approaches will not be sufficient. And finding new approaches will not be easy or non-controversial. But we have substantial assets and skills to bring to bear on the problems.... And we have the strongest reasons possible to get our answers right: the future of our children, and of our children's children."

Lloyd Axworthy Address on Sustainable Development
