Petition
Petition to:
Representative Louise Slaughter
Senator Charles Schumer
Senator Kristin Gillibrand
We the undersigned residents
of the State of New York do hereby petition you to form a multi-agency federal
task force to address urgent and significant threats posed by the giant toxic
waste complex known as the LOOW to the health of area residents, their economic
well-being and the environmental preservation of the Niagara Watershed.
The US Army Corps of Engineers, Waste Management and the Modern Corporation all
maintain operations in the same 7,500 acre toxic dump site less than a mile from
the Lewiston-Porter Schools. Nuclear wastes from the World War II Manhattan
Project repose in a temporary containment structure alongside the Northeasts
only hazardous waste site and a municipal landfill operation.
The Army Corps has arbitrarily dismissed the communitys Restoration Advisory
Board, depriving residents of an independent voice in matters related to their
health and welfare while the long-awaited cleanup of nuclear and other hazardous
wastes from WWII has yet to be undertaken. The Corps has even ignored the
expressed collective will of all our local legislators, not to mention a
strongly worded opinion of the NY Attorney General affirming the legal status of
the existing RAB in representing area residents. Within the same horrific dump
site perilously close to Lake Ontario, Waste Management continues its efforts to
expand its operations, despite vigorous challenges from area residents, local
elected officials and those who represent us in Albany.
It is thus incumbent on our federal representatives to take action
immediately. To do less is unconscionable and un-American. Should a terrorist
attack, a natural disaster, or the breakdown of containment materials in any
part of the LOOW dump site occur, we would have a disaster on our hands worse
than the Gulf oil spill. Toxic materials escaping into the air or the waterways
of the area would threaten human health, regional economic viability and the
environmental treasure of the entire Great Lakes Watershed.
Again, we, as residents of this area, demand that you, our federal
representatives, address the current and impending threats posed by the LOOW
site. We demand the formation of a multi-agency federal task force to do what is
right in resolving the host of complicated issues entwined with the public and
private entities with operations in the long-standing mess that is the LOOW.
WE'VE HAD ENOUGH!
